Exploring trans cultural symbolism and poetry to evoke the rich beauty and the hidden mystery of an ambiguous motif. Popo granatum is a play on the words Popo (meaning police officer) and pomegranate.

In some traditions the pomegranate is a symbol of fecundity and prosperity, a tree found in the Higher Garden, the Garden of Essence.  Higher because it is all fruit.  The kernels of individuality have been absorbed into the whole.

Others have chosen to associate the pomegranate with the hand grenade. Though the starting point of the painting is somewhat ambiguous the intention is to turn despair into something beautiful.

Navigating the interplay between symbolism and global issues, the palm tree, a recurring motif in Amber Khokhar’s work, represents a duality that encapsulates both the splendour of nature and the depth of human impact. Serving as a potent reminder of the complex connections between environment, economics, and society.

An emblem of resilience, growth, and beauty, the palm tree stands tall as a representation of nature's majesty. Its elegant fronds reaching skywards mirrors our aspirations towards the heavens, towards a harmonious coexistence. The exploitation of this resource, often resulting in deforestation and ecological devastation, symbolizes the reckless pursuit of profit that disregards the delicate and phenomenal balance of our world.

Part of a triptych, Fragrance and Feminine; Feminine and Prayer; Prayer and Fragrance, this particular hand- embellished print holds exoteric and esoteric meanings for contemplation. Among various symbols, it references the Sufi Farid ud-Din Attar of Nishapur's work from 1221. Attar, meaning apothecary, features in his poetic masterpiece, ‘The Conference of the Birds’, the wise Hoopoe bird who serves as a messenger in the quest to find the legendary Simorgh. The Hoopoe bird holds significance in the courtship of King Solomon and Queen Bilqis. The Cypress Tree symbolizes fragrance, bringing both purifying and grounding qualities, while prayer is represented by the tree's upright frame.

A fallen feather

This way then that

Upright in faith bowed in prayer

Made beloved to You in this world

I abase back to You the fragrance, the feminine and prayer

In many traditions, geometry reflects the universe's fundamental structure.

Decagram refers to the 10-pointed star, a combination of One (I) and Zero (O), symbolizing perfection, the first couple, the created and the non-created, the beginning and end.

Pythagoras called 10 ‘the best’ and Agrippa ‘the number of all’ or ‘universal.'

Amber finds herself continually drawn to the symbolism of the number 10, signifying the primal union of the masculine and feminine, but also the inherent allure of the motifs themselves—the captivating polygons that beckon her. With each examination, she delves deeper, pondering the essence of these individual shapes.

Today, they transform before her eyes into celestial angels, sparking curiosity and contemplation anew.
